The Law Society of BC is seeking a temporary, full-time Articled Student in our Practice Advice department for a 12-month term.

Articling is the last phase of formal legal education prior to call and admission to the Law Society of British Columbia. It provides the opportunity to balance out academic studies with practical work under the supervision and guidance of a principal.

The Articled Student will be employed by the Law Society for a 12-month term, during which they will attend the Professional Legal Training Course for 10 weeks. To ensure exposure to different areas of practice, the Articled Student will need to spend 4 to 8 weeks of the articling term seconded to law firm to gain experience in a legal private practice setting.

While working at the Law Society, responsibilities will include some or all of the following:
  • Conducting legal research, including identifying issues, selecting resources and recording, analyzing, applying and communicating research results.
  • Writing legal opinions and other communications.
  • Analyzing legal issues and developing, assessing and recommending options for resolution and preparing a plan for implementation.
  • Assisting in preparation of legal pleadings and advocacy materials.
  • Drafting and reviewing contracts and memorandums of understanding.
  • Interpreting and analyzing the Law Society Rules and Code of Professional Conduct for BC to assist in the preparation of practice resources and tools to support legal professionals in fulfilling their duties in the practice of law.
  • Attending and presenting at hearings and committee meetings and assisting with the preparation of materials for the meetings.
Qualifications
  • Eligibility for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Law Society of BC operations is an asset.

The salary for this position is $65,000.
